the president called up senators lindsey graham, john mccain, and marco rubio to support their efforts on the issue and urged the senate to pass a bill as soon as possible. senator rubio's office tells nbc news the senator appreciated the president's call and is hopeful they can come up with a bill that will win bipartisan support. we will be right back. that is good news. >>> we're back. we've all heard the story of oscar pistorius, the inspiring double amputee olympic athlete who is being accused of killing his girlfriend. the blade runner has been charged with murdering his 30-year-old model girlfriend in the early morning hours of valentine's day. pistorius was in court again today, pleading innocent. prosecutors said it was premeditated murder. fans were stunned when they heard about the incident, stunned their hero might be capable of such an act as murder. let's think about this. why are we so quick to give athletes the hero title or assumption thinking they're super on and off the field? now pistorius joins other athletes who have fallen far from heaven, o.j. simpson, a-rod, la

in a bruising confirmation hearing. the sharpest exchange against senator john mccain who criticized hagel's opposition to the troop surge in iraq. and hagel apologized for using the term the jewish lobby in the past. >> i have already said i regret referencing the jewish lobby. i should have said pro israel. i think it is the only time on the record that i have ever said that. >> a republican plan to vote against him. he has backing among many democrats. >>> blinding snow blamed for a deadly pileup on a michigan highway. the mile long stretch of crashes involving 30 trucks and cars. three people were killed including two children believed to be siblings. and at least a dozen others were hospitalized. witnesses say they were driving on i-75 when conditions went from clear to whiteout in just a matter of seconds. >>> a similar scene along a snowy highway west of minneapolis. three dozen big rigs, trucks, cars smashed into one another shutting down interstate 70. at least ten were hospitalized. the extreme conditions are putting part of the country in a deep freeze. accuweather's jim dickey

his friend and republican colleague john mccain. was there something personal there? >> there is always something personal in relationships between senators and chuck hagel is a former senator. i can't speculate on motives of each of the senators. they are probably different motives, an array of intent and purpose. i think there will be a vote this week in the committee, if not this week, next week, but soon. i believe there will be republican votes for senator hagel and if not in committee, at least on the floor. i believe he will be approved. i think the personal issues, hopefully, will be put behind us. most importantly, it will be a bipartisan vote. whatever the motives on a personal level, i hope partisanship is not part of this process as the american people watching that hearing may have concluded it was because the weight of the republican questioning, the prosecuting or crass examination aspect was so much on the republican side. >> do you agree with the old tradition that president's should be able to pick their own cabinet, choose the people with whom they
